The Seven Spirits of God
Some Bible topics are explained in detail, while some are only referenced. This topic doesn’t have an elaborate explanation, but we can grow in our knowledge and understanding of God by its consideration. What or Who are the 7 Spirits of God?
I pray that God will give us individual insights for our own individual benefits.
Rev 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars;
Hath meaning possesses. Jesus possesses the 7 Spirits.
We know the Holy Spirit as the third part of the Holy Trinity (or godhead, as it’s sometimes called), but now this verse says there are 7 Spirits.
Are these 7 different spirits with 7 different names? Do they have different personalities? Do I address each one differently? This seems important to me, why doesn’t the Bible say more about this topic?
Deu 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Rest assured that the Bible tells us what we need to know, not always everything we want to know. We can find out more by studying God’s word and getting illumination from the Holy Spirit. Let’s reference John 17 and get more revelation of Jesus’ prayer to the Father for us.
3 in 1
Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
Joh 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
Joh 17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
More than just saying that Jesus and the father were in agreement, he said they were actually one in spirit, soul and body. He wanted believers to have the same experience of being inhabited by God, the Father as well as God, the Son, for the reason He stated.
2Co 5:19a To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself,
From Rev 3 we understand that Jesus hath or possesses the 7 Spirits of God. Let’s pause and consider what that means to us individually in our lives. Shall we count it as theological mental concepts or can we grow in the knowledge it?
Jesus’ Prayer Answered
Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
We should consider our lives and actions in the light of this revelation Christ in us, the hope of glory. Just as Jesus walked the earth with God and the Spirit (now 7 spirits) inside him, so do we walk.
Further Revelation
Rev 4:5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fireburning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
It’s hard to comprehend that the 7 spirits are 7 lamps of fire. Let’s check context from the previous chapters.
Rev 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
In this spiritual vision from an angel, The explanation of the images in John’s vision are revealed in chapter 5.
- Stars are angels
- Candlesticks are churches
- Lamps of fire are the 7 spirits of God
- Jesus is described as a Lamb having 7 horns and 7 eyes.
So there is much symbolism in this vision in Revelation ,which should be considered for our full comprehension.
Rev 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
- So for some reason, these 7 spirits are sent into the earth. This is not elaborated on or mentioned again. Why is that? I believe God told us what we needed to know and nothing more.
The 7 Spirits in the Book of Isaiah
Here in the Old Testament we see the 7 spirits listed individually. The same spirits as in Revelation? God will show us what we need to know in Isaiah 11.
Isa 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
- Jesse being King David’s father The Branch being his descendant, Jesus,
Isa 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
Isa 11:3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
Isa 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Isa 11:5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
- So these 7 spirits are 7 attributes or kinds of understandings or personalities or wisdoms of Jesus.
- It’s interesting how God is also known by seven different names that reveal his character and traits in the Old Testament. This isn’t merely referring to God the Father, but also to God the Son & Holy Spirit mutually sharing these qualities of personality.
7 names of God in The Old Testament
- Jehovah Jireh: The LORD our provider (Genesis 22:14)
- Jehovah Rapha: The LORD our Healer (Exodus 15:26)
- Jehovah Nissi: The LORD our Banner (Exodus 17:15)
- Jehovah Shalom: The LORD our Peace (Judges 6:24)
- Jehovah Raah: The LORD our Shepherd (Psalms 23:1)
- Jehovah Tsidkenu: The LORD our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6)
- Jehovah Shammah: The LORD is Here (Ezekiel 48:35)
Jesus embodied all these personalities when He walks on this earth as does the Holy Spirit in us today. He makes all of these qualities available to us when we need them and to others who need them, through us. We represent the kingdom of God on earth with our purpose being to reveal Jesus to those Who need to know Him by revealing His character.
- Each name gives us insight into the many facets of God which we cannot see in totality from our perspective, because He is so great and vast, we can only see one or maybe 2 sides at one time. His names magnify His complete character and our response can only be praise and worship, as we see Him for Who He is. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, truly three in one.
